Birmingham, England, was the centre of the world pen trade for more than a century, employing thousands of people, pioneering craftsmanship, manufacturing
processes and employment opportunities especially for women. The availability of cheap pens accelerated the development of education and literacy throughout the world. The Birmingham Pen Trade
Heritage Association is working to ensure that this important part of Birmingham's history may continue to be appreciated worldwide.
The Penroom is a Registered Charity No.1064945, and is located in the heart of Birmingham, England, in the district of the Jewellery Quarter.
The Argent Centre - Site of the Penroom Museum

Volunteers are available to provide information and guidance to visitors.
Admission is free; however, donations for the upkeep of the Museum are welcome.

he History of the Birmingham Steel Pen Trade and its impact on the development of employment, trade and growth in Birmingham, alongside the social implications. - Learn about Victorian times.
- Visit the two display rooms showing some of the tools and implements for manufacturing steel nibs.
- Make use of interactive exhibitions.
- Hands on experience on making nibs.
- Write with quills and steel pens.
- Museum trails and a variety of worksheets for varying abilities are available.
- Age- related talks.
- Teacher’s Pack/Activity Packs containing artefacts and factual material.
